Blower fan speeds 1,2,3 packed up simultaneously. Resistor pack is accessible from footwell of car. Remove 4 pin black plug on underside of blower. Then slide and pull out resistor pack. This £55 beauty has a thermal fuse across top terminals. Bridge temporarily with a piece of wire.
Remove the blend door actuator: The actuator is placed on or beside the heater box. Remove the wiring clips with a screwdriver. You need to be gentle; these clips can be brittle and break. After removing the clips, press the tab on the wiring connector and pull it off.

Then a few miles into my journey home, the dash came up saying that the AC was off due to high engine temperature. I checked my engine temp gauge, and it hadn't moved at all - and didn't move the entire 30 mile journey home (still in 1C).
